CURRENT FISHING CONDITIONS
The fall in South Florida brings about the second large fish migration of the year. Mullet and pilchards show up on the beaches and offshore en masse. The pelagics are in hot pursuit. The beaches are loaded with snook, tarpon, spanish mackerel, bluefish, and sharks of all kinds. The beach fishing is easy and great fun if you have little ones who just want to catch a ton of fish! Offshore, common catches are dolphin, sailfish, king mackerel, wahoo and blackfin tuna.
The tuna have been particularly thick this year, with boats catching 20 or more in a 4 hour trip. If you have the tackle (which we do) and the inclination to leave the biting tunas (difficult choice), you can pull a few of the blackfins out a little deeper to try for a Blue Marlin around the full moons. They follow the tunas because they like to eat them just as much as we do! You're also likely to encounter a wahoo.
Speaking of wahoo, they become the targets of our Bahamas trips. These speedsters are caught by high-speed trolling lures near the reef ledges common in the islands. They provide great sport, provided you are equipped to handle the husky ones. Fish over 80lbs are not uncommon, and 40lbs is a smallish fish. Our overnight Bahamas trips are great way to experience the islands. Besides the wahoo, there is fantastic bottom fishing year-round for grouper and snapper. Snorkeling in the crystal-clear waters is an unforgettable experience. The reefs are very much alive, and provide plenty of opportunities for catching your own lobster, which the resort, Blue Marlin Cove, will prepare for you that night, in addition to any fish you bring home.
Tight Lines,
